High School Students From The Engineering Place Visit AIF

At the heart of The Engineering Place’s mission lies a commitment to fostering creativity and critical thinking among young minds. Their engaging workshops and interactive activities provide students with the opportunity to explore the fascinating world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). By nurturing a passion for these disciplines at an early age, The Engineering Place aims to create a diverse and talented pipeline of future engineers.

One of the standout features of The Engineering Place is its unwavering dedication to community outreach. Through partnerships with local schools and organizations, the institution extends its impact beyond the university campus, reaching underserved communities and encouraging inclusion in STEM fields. By hosting events and programs that emphasize diversity and accessibility, The Engineering Place helps break down barriers and empowers individuals from all backgrounds to pursue engineering careers.

Dr. Ruijuan Xu and Dr. Yin Liu from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at NC State served as the faculty mentors for the MSE High School Summer Day Camp, which is part of the Imagine Engineering Camps sponsored by The Engineering Place. Working with The Engineering Place, they designed fun, engaging, and hands-on challenge projects for high school students to solve a real world problem related to the discipline of materials science. As part of the camp experience, these students also had opportunities to tour the AIF and research labs in the Department of MSE, where they gained a basic understanding of materials science research.

The AIF participates in many outreach and engagement activities every year. We know that these events showcase the advanced instruments available in our facility, allowing high school students to see real-world applications of engineering principles and technologies.

AIF Tour

AIF Lab Manager, Roberto Garcia, gave the students a tour of our facility. Here he is explaining what the ToF-SIMS is and its capabilities.

Fun Contest

These students competed in a friendly competition to see who could put on a cleanroom bunny suit the fastest. Fun fact: these suits are called bunny suits because it makes people look like oversized rabbits.
